Sometimes the Sign’s Ambiguous!

From the earliest times we’ve been employing signs and symbols to let others know where we are, what we do.  I loved the deft signs for the cobblers, in Venice

though my favourite has always been Paris’s wordless Curb Your Dog campaign

Curb your Dog

Sometimes, though, the sign’s so ambiguous only a sense of humour or a little sleuthing will reveal its meaning.  Take the angel sign I came across in Urnäsch, an ancient, picture postcard village at the foot of Santis Mountain in Switzerland.

Angel says

Now, I can see how a cute chunky Swiss bull could tell me about a restaurant

Happy Swiss Beef, I guess

especially when it’s hanging out over a pretty terrace with tables and chairs inviting us to come, eat

but a trumpet playing angel?

My guess is the wife liked it, so they bought it anyway and put it up to partner the bull – on the building they bought next door 🙂

Fun and games with “The Sign Says“, this week’s WP Photo Challenge.

  1. We have a not so quaint little village called Niagara-On-The-Lake here. One of the signs out front of one of the historic building is quite similar. It is called, “The Angel Inn”.
Your angel would be handy as a landmark for people saying things like, “I will meet you under the angel sign”, or “turn left at the angel sign”.

  2. A wonderful gallery of pictorial signs that work beyond the barriers of language! Except for the angel that does lead to more questions! Your guess sounds most plausible 🙂

  3. I take the putto to represent a store selling /fixing musical instruments, past or present …

  7. The signs are wonderful, to be sure, but you sure have visited some of the World’s beautiful locales. Good for you! Good for us, too, because you photographed them all and share them with us. 🙂
