A little something extra, seen at one of the makeshift elephant stables in Kandy during the Perahera a few years ago. A dozing elephant – what a drab picture without the busy little cockerel 🙂

I know you have a pash on eles – and no wonder ! The cockerel here is truly handsome ! – he looks as if he’s taking care of business, alright. I’m so glad I don’t have to doze standing up …
What a contrast. Heads pointing in opposite directions, going about their business, oblivious to each other.
I love the color contrast/pop of the cockerel.
Love that rooster. I love a symbiotic relationship. Pests are kept down and the rooster gets to eat- it’s perfect
I don’t see a drab elephant picture, just a lovely twosome photo that works well!
I was fascinated with his mottled ear. Cockerel looks quite small and young.
A welcome spot of colour. But I have to agree with Gilly…an elephant shot could never be termed drab! 🙂
Fun!
Elephants are always fun, Thatiana 🙂
They are! And cute at the same time. Lovely!
That cockerel looks like he is just taking a deep breath so he lift his head and belt out a “cock-a-doodle-doo” to wake up the elephant. I guess he doesn’t like it when they fall asleep on their feet.
Sri Lankan cockerels always seem very ‘coq ‘a hoop’ – and, as you can see, pretty small, always scratching away – or perhaps that’s because you see them, out and about, in a way we rarely do these days – and certainly in the city we never see roosters any more, they’re considered anti-social with their early morning wake up calls! I suppose they do in
Sri Lanka too, because when a rooster wakes you before dawn you always say (or think to yourself) “he’s for the pot”! 🙂
So many wonderful contrasts in this photo: big/small, monochrome/bright, sleep/awake. Love all of them! ☺
🙂
Great extra!
Love the tones Meredith and that cockerel is such a jewel in this great shot.
Yes – a tiny perfect jewel. And wasn’t he having a great time. It seemed strange to see him there, wandering freely in the middle of the city and I wondered whether he was brought along with the elephant to keep her company – you know, like they sometimes put a sheep or a goat in a stable with some horses?
Def adds a little something, though I’d hardly call any picture of an elephant drab! They are awesome 😉
I know what you mean, but isn’t it a drab little corner? On top of which is the sleeping elephant 🙂
Yes the corner is drab. Also, didn’t know elephants slept standing up! Tricky.
🙂
That’s really amazing!
The cockerel didn’t seem in the least over-awed – I’m convinced they’re friends. 🙂
Wonderful pic, Meredith. The cockerel is a great extra bit of colour. 🙂
Necessary colour, I contend 🙂
that is precious
You’ve hit the nail on the head – so that’s why I’ve always liked it 🙂
Made me smile! 🙂
AAWWWWW …. what a photo! 🙂
the elephant is beautiful – looks like he could do with a good fed though! Lovely shot.
Dear Meredith,
I LOVE this photo! I love the splash of color, and the perspective with the cockerel in the foreground, making it look big enough to hold its own in a photo with an elephant. I think it would be a great candidate for Cee’s Oddball Photo Challenge–for striking and unusual photos that belong in a category of their own.
The lighting is wonderful!
WOW …. it looks like you were right in there with them. Great capture ..!!!
Love it ….
I stumbled across your blog and found an ‘elephants’ tag – I thought I might be the only one. 🙂 I do so love them. I’ve visited Kandy once, but I couldn’t witness the Perahara. I’ll try to find your festival pictures.
